Google has rolled out a redesigned Gmail for both mobile and web in a single inbox, by offering a simple design and organisational tools to help users better control their inboxes.
“Today, Gmail is getting a brand new inbox on desktop and mobile that puts you back in control using simple, easy organization,” wrote Gamil Product Manager,Itamar Gilad in a blog post on Wednesday.
“The new inbox groups mails into categories which appear in different tabs. You simply choose which categories you want and voilà! Your inbox is organized in a way that lets you see what’s new at a glance and decide which emails you want to read when,” Gilan added.
To customise the new inbox, users can select the tabs they want from all five to none, drag-and-drop to move messages between tabs, set certain senders to always appear in a particular tab and star messages so that they also appear in the Primary tab.
In the Gmail for Android 4.0+ and Gmail for iPhone and iPad apps, users can see their Primary mail when they open the app and can easily navigate to the other tabs.
In case someone doesn’t like the concept of the new inbox, Google allows them to switch off all optional tabs to go back to classic view, or switch to any of their other favorite inbox types.
Google is rolling out the new inbox gradually. The desktop, Android and iOS versions will become available within the next few weeks. However, if someone would like to try out the new inbox on Desktop sooner, Google asks him/her to keep an eye on the gear menu and select Configure inbox when it appears in the Settings options.
