In a bid to reach new audiences, Wikipedia, world’s largest encyclopedia, has launched a new project enabling registered users to post videos. Wikipedia is now rolling out a new HTML5 video player and editor that should make it easier for people to add video and allow them to add captions to the videos. Until now, Wikipedia articles have remained largely text-based. It currently hosts only about 15,000 videos.
Wikipedia.org founder announced on Twitter today that the English language version of the world’s encyclopedia will go dark for a day in protest of SOPA and PIPA starting at midnight on Wednesday, January 18. With their commitment confirmed, Wikipedia will be joining a slew of websites and companies that will suspend their operations for one day in an effort raise awareness around the two bills.
